Michelle Cawthorn’s exhibition Songbird
Published 1 July, 2021
Memory is at the core of Michelle Cawthorn’s works, whether through enigmatic coded abstract forms or recognisable and familiar native birds. Her collaged avian works connect to colonial history as well as her own; and her established visual language of repeated small ink marks provides a meditative framework for allowing and encouraging the act of memory itself. As she tells Richard Morecroft, bird calls connect her with the experiences and locations of childhood – and her works invite us all to reconnect with those triggers of our own intimate timelines.
